Give us your elevator pitch. What does your business do?
The Natural Nutritionist is a leading Australian Sports Nutritionist who specialises in metabolic efficiency, real food based sports nutrition, high-performance fat loss, and teaching you how easy real food living and performance can be.
Why did you start your business?
The Natural Nutritionist came about due to a distinct lack of education as to how simple good nutrition really can be. By simply bringing your nutrition back to nature, you can take a giant step towards better health.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is the holistic balance between real food, gut health, hormone control and stress management. It is not a fad or a quick fix, but a way of life that facilitates your goals today and your health now and tomorrow.
What are your three top health tips?
- JERF: food that comes out of the ground, off a tree or from an animal is the most nutrient-dense food.
- Gut health with real food and probiotic-rich foods such as KW coconut yoghurt and kefir.
- Stress management via meditation, yoga, diaphragmatic breathing and proper sleep hygiene.
- Significantly reduce, if not remove, your intake of refined carbohydrates – if it comes in a packet or box or has a mascot, there will be a better choice.
- Avoid the perfectionism trap – food is to nourish, share and enjoy and there is no place for extreme restriction or deprivation.
- Listen to your body – it speaks loud and clear and once you learn to eat intuitively you will take your health and wellness to another level.
In 2009 I graduated with a Graduate Diploma of Human Nutrition from Deakin University, Melbourne. During the course of my post-graduate studies I was like a new woman, and all because I had found my purpose in life. In the years prior I lived by the quote “the purpose of life is a life of purpose” but it wasn’t until I had found mine that my entire life changed. Training as a Nutritionist was honestly the best thing that I have ever done. Food to me is now about nourishing, healing and sharing, and the reason behind The Natural Nutritionist. You can read more on “my story” here: http://www.thenaturalnutritionist.com.au/my-story-finally/
How do you manage a work/life balance?
I’ll admit, it is an area I can still improve on but I know for a fact that yoga and meditation have changed my life. I aim to practice yoga at least twice a week, meditate regularly and cultivate mindfulness as often as I can throughout the day.
The best book to read for better health and wellness?
My two long-term favourites are Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes and Primal Endurance by Mark Sisson and Brad Kearns. They are quite different in their application but both dispel the nutrition/sports nutrition myths of the last five decades and clearly identify where the developed world has gone wrong, and where our current and future focus must exist.
